Zhadiboli Literature Conference, January 2004

*Preserving a Dream: Dr. Vikas Amte, His Swaranandvan Orchestra, and the Eleventh Zhadiboli Literature Conference, January 2004*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Editor’s Preface*
      This reflective essay by Adv. Lakhansingh Katre is more than a personal memory — it is a testimony to the cultural spirit of India’s regions and their power to inspire collective pride. The Zhadiboli Literature Conference is a grassroots movement that preserves the voices of eastern Maharashtra’s forest-belt communities, whose dialect and traditions often remain outside mainstream literary recognition.
      In recounting the eleventh conference held in January 2004 at Anandwan, the legendary rehabilitation community founded by Baba Amte, the author highlights a moment when art, social service, and literature converged. The Swaranandvan Orchestra, composed of differently-abled musicians from Anandwan, stands as a symbol of resilience and the human capacity to create beauty even from suffering. That Dr. Vikas Amte, despite illness, gifted this performance to a regional literary gathering is not only a gesture of kindness but also an act that elevated the dignity of an entire community.
     This essay is thus a tribute — not only to Dr. Vikas Amte and the Orchestra, but to the enduring dream of cultural empowerment through language, art, and social solidarity. It situates a regional dialect within the broader fabric of Indian literary history, reminding us that the most unforgettable dreams are often born in the most humble places.
*Dr. Vikas Amte, His Swaranandvan Orchestra and the Eleventh Zhadiboli Literature Conference, January 2004: An Unforgettable Dream Realized*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      The Zhadiboli Literature Conferences, which celebrate the dialect, culture, and literary spirit of the Zhadipatti region, have now crossed the milestone of thirty-two gatherings. The most recent, the 32nd, was held at Warora’s Anandwan in Chandrapur district during December 2024. My own village, Borkanhār, has had the rare privilege of hosting two such conferences — the ninth in 2002 and the twenty-sixth in 2018. Fortune smiled upon me in allowing participation of a more personal nature: I was the Reception President of the ninth conference at Borkanhār (February 2002), the President of the eleventh at Warora (Anandwan) (January 2004), the silent coordinator of the majestic twelfth at Chandrapur (January 2005), and the organizer of the twenty-sixth in 2018.
      Among all of these, however, the eleventh conference at Anandwan remains a singular chapter in the history of Zhadiboli literature — unparalleled, extraordinary, and radiant in memory. Held on the 3rd and 4th of January 2004, this conference gained immortality through the magnanimous gesture of Dr. Vikas Amte. For us, he unveiled a treasure that no literary conference — not even those of all-India stature — had ever received before: a free, soul-stirring performance of the world-renowned Swaranandvan Orchestra.
      To understand the profundity of this gift, one must recall the circumstances. At that very time, Dr. Amte himself was suffering from cold, cough, and fever. He was in need of rest, yet bound by his word to our Reception President, Shri Na. Go. Thute, he chose instead to fulfill his promise with grace. In his fragile state, he not only arranged the grand performance by differently-abled artistes whose music transcends the ordinary, but he also sang a few songs himself.
     Those moments remain etched in my life as a rare jewel. Never before had I experienced such exultant joy, and never again do I expect to encounter its like. For the people of Zhadipatti, this divine musical banquet became a memory eternal — a blessing that even prominent national conferences had not been granted. That this miracle occurred at our Zhadiboli conference of 2004 still feels like a dream. And that I had the honor of presiding over it — to me, it signified the true fulfillment of my journey.
     From that day to this, the memory of Dr. Vikas Amte dwells within me as an enduring presence. To live in that memory is itself a reward, a silent wealth.
     How then can gratitude be measured? Words falter. We remain forever indebted to Dr. Amte for transforming our dream into reality. With reverence, I bow to him and to every member of the Swaranandvan Orchestra. A hundred salutations, and more.
